How to Use a Dumpy Level
A dumpy level is a surveying instrument used to measure, transfer, or set horizontal lines. They’re typically used to establish height, distance, and bearings from different parts of a building/construction site. These instruments should be used by professionals who understand how it works to avoid damaging it, or getting inaccurate readings.
Guide to Using a Dumpy Level
Dumpy levels often come in kits that include basic tools like the level head, a levelling rod (or E meter staff), and the tripod.
Step 1 – Set the Dumpy Level
The dumpy level needs to be completely horizontal in order for it to be accurate, and for it to work properly. Set up the tripod where you have a clear sight of the benchmark, at a similar height to but preferably higher, than the benchmark. Adjust the height of the tripod until it is eye level, and then move the legs of the tripod so it is balanced and can hold the level head properly. Push the tripod into the ground to keep it stable and take care not to knock it. If you do knock it, you’ll have to relevel it again.
Step 2 – Take a Reading
Your first measurement will be the backsight measurement. The backsight measurement allows you to calculate the height of the instrument/level from which all other levels are calculated. Focus the eyepiece first to see the cross hairs, then the telescope focus to see the numbers on the staff; use the fine adjustment to ensure a precision line-up. The levelling bubble should be central.
Difference Between Auto Level and Dumpy Level
Dumpy levels are typically manual levels that require more effort than auto levels. Dumpy levels are also not as accurate as auto levels. The dumpy level also needs to be adjusted constantly, while the auto level will automatically recalibrate as it needs to.
